The release of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results has caused a stir across Nigerian social media platforms, with many users expressing concern over candidates’ disappointing performances.

Out of the 1,955,069 individuals who took the UTME this year, more than 1.5 million scored below 200. This revelation has raised alarms regarding the preparedness of students for such an important national exam.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) published a breakdown of the results on April 5, highlighting that only 420,415 candidates managed to score above 200. This leaves 75% of the examinees with scores under 200, and less than 1% achieving scores over 300.

This outcome has sparked discussions about the quality of education, the challenges candidates face, and the broader implications for university admissions in Nigeria.

The UTME is an annual entrance examination for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. This year, the CBT examination was held between 24 April to 5 May.

Pass Rate

According to the data from JAMB, out of the 1.9 million (1,955,069) available results, only 12,414 candidates or 0.63 per cent scored above 300 points.

The data also revealed that only 22 per cent –or 420,415 candidates– scored above 200 out of the 400 obtainable points.

About 78 per cent of the candidates scored below 200 points in the UTME.

@ale_A3:”Why are people linking JAMB failure to PELLER? Anyone who does is simply jealous of the young boy. Peller didn’t stop anyone from concentrating on their books. Y’all have to stop blaming other people for your bad choices.”

@ogekero:”TikTok influencers like Peller are derailing Nigerian youths. The poor JAMB result will make you understand where we are going. I was at the center and most parents were complaining that children don’t read unlike our own time. Another major problem is Private Schools.”

@Leged45:”Watching Peller Live on TikTok is one of the top 3 reasons for this year’s terrible JAMB performance. If you have high IQ, that shii reduces it.”
