Former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, has revealed that close allies of the former president, often referred to as the cabal, deliberately bypassed him and sent secret memos directly to Buhari during his time in office.
Gambari, who served as Buhari’s chief of staff from May 13, 2020, to May 29, 2023, made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Inside Sources on Friday.
“They knew his weak moment, they knew when to smuggle (memos) because they knew him as they interacted with him informally,” he said.
He recalled that upon his appointment, Buhari publicly announced that all memos to the presidency must pass through the Chief of Staff.
“When I came as Chief of Staff to the President, he made a statement publicly. He said all memos must go through the Chief of Staff before coming to him,” Gambari noted.
He added that even Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and many ministers respected that directive and followed procedure.
“Even the Vice President (Yemi Osinbajo), to his credit, always passed his memos through me and several ministers,” Gambari stated.
However, he said some individuals in Buhari’s inner circle ignored the rule.
“Our people still got their memos to him from behind because they knew his weak point and who to use, and he never stopped them,” Gambari said.
He concluded that although the memos were sent behind his back, he still got to see them eventually.
“But the advantage I had was that the memos came back to me,” he added.
