Former Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar (rtd), has raised concern over the large number of unemployed and uneducated youths in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region, warning that the situation threatens the country’s stability.
In a post on his X account on Friday, Abubakar reflected on his recent visits to Kano and Daura, where he observed what he described as a worrying trend among young people.
“During my recent visit to Kano and Daura, I observed a significant youth population. While this holds great potential, it also presents a serious challenge, particularly when the youths are unemployed, underemployed, uneducated or lack skills,” he said.
He noted that jobless and frustrated youths are vulnerable and can easily be manipulated.
“These conditions can lead to frustration, making them susceptible to manipulation by self-centered individuals. This is a challenge in virtually every state of the federation, especially Northern States,” Abubakar added.
He called on authorities to act by creating opportunities for youth to acquire skills.
“Let us engage them and provide Skills Training Centers in all States,” he urged.
His remarks come as the country continues to grapple with rising youth restiveness, drug use, and insecurity, which many link to lack of jobs and meaningful engagement.
