Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has lashed out at U.S.-based Nigerian professor and columnist Farooq Kperogi over a Facebook post in which Kperogi falsely claimed that former First Lady Aisha Buhari had divorced her late husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Kperogi later admitted the post was based on unverified information and apologized, but Ahmad dismissed the apology, calling it insufficient and too late.
“Farooq Kperogi’s reckless and ill-timed publication about the personal life of the former First Lady, Her Excellency Aisha Buhari, a widow in mourning, is a grave disservice to the very profession he teaches, journalism,” Ahmad said.
He accused Kperogi of abandoning basic journalistic principles by relying on hearsay.
“You can’t be a journalism teacher and specialize gravely in speculative reportage,” he added.
Ahmad said the apology failed to repair the damage already done, insisting that Kperogi’s actions lacked integrity.
“To act on secondhand claims, admit they were not intended to be public and then seek refuge behind an apology after the damage is done is not courage, it is cowardice dressed as contrition,” he said.
He argued that journalism should be grounded in truth, accountability, and respect — values Kperogi ignored.
“Journalism should be about these three fronts; truth, accountability and respect, and Farooq failed on all three fronts,” Ahmad added.
