Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, says his administration is seeking a closer working relationship with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to tackle the state’s growing housing needs.
Governor Yusuf disclosed this during a meeting with the FMBN Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi, and his team who paid a visit to the Government House in Kano.
According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said the state’s rising population makes it urgent to expand access to decent and affordable housing.
“Kano State Government has always been at the forefront of development, and housing is a critical aspect of growth,” Yusuf said. “We recognize the importance of accessible and affordable housing in enhancing the quality of life of our citizens.”
He also stressed the need for cooperation with relevant federal institutions. “Our administration believes in a collaborative approach between government and agencies like the Federal Mortgage Bank, as well as other stakeholders essential to achieving our goals,” he added.
Speaking earlier, FMBN’s Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi, said the visit was aimed at exploring ways the bank and the Kano State Government could work together on housing delivery.
He said the bank was created to help Nigerians, especially those in the low- and middle-income brackets, access affordable homes.
“We commend the recent decision by Kano State Government to return its civil servants to the National Housing Fund Scheme, which is a testament to responsive governance and dedication to workers’ welfare,” Osidi noted.
He revealed that the bank had financed ten housing projects across Kano State, valued at N6.8 billion, as part of efforts to address the housing shortfall.
Osidi expressed the bank’s readiness to strengthen ties with the Kano government to meet housing development targets in the state.
