A Nigerian lady has voiced her disappointment online after a man she had known for two years revealed he could never be in a relationship with her simply because of her fluent use of Pidgin English.
In a video shared by TikTok user @elegantglow_, she recounted how she recently reconnected with the man, and as they began to consider a romantic relationship, he grew increasingly uncomfortable with the way she spoke.
She explained that although the man occasionally used Pidgin himself, he disapproved of how well she spoke it, especially when communicating with her siblings. He reportedly told her it was inappropriate for a firstborn child and claimed it set a bad example.
According to her, he bluntly stated, “You’re not fit to be the mother of my future kids you’ll teach them Pidgin.”
During a discussion about relationships, he reiterated that he couldn’t see himself with someone who speaks Pidgin so effortlessly.
The story quickly gained attention online, with many viewers criticizing the man’s perspective. While some found his opinion offensive, others stood in support of the lady, emphasizing that Pidgin English is a valid and vibrant expression of Nigerian culture.

@Mustapha: “Pidgin can be fun among friends, but many men don’t find it attractive when women use it often. It’s seen as a street language, mostly used by guys to show dominance or bond with their boys. But when women speak it, it can come off as rough or lacking class. As men who value elegance and modesty, we naturally admire women who carry themselves with grace and speak in a refined way. It just makes them stand out as more respectable and desirable.”
@Amina Ghali: “It’s coz you are comfortable with them.and if he can’t accept you that way his loss my dear.”
