Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Janbulo in Kano held its annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day on Wednesday, acknowledging individuals and organisations that have supported the school in recent years.

Among those honoured were the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala; the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSMB), Comrade Rabi’u Sale Gwarzo; Professor Mustapha Zakari Karkarna; and several non-governmental and private organisations including the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Ammam Rice, and Rufaida Yoghurt.

Speaking at the event, the school’s Principal, Hajiya Saliha Abdullahi Karaye, thanked those who had contributed to the school’s development and pointed out some of the major improvements achieved in recent years.

“I am honored to stand before you today to celebrate the achievements of our dear school,” she said. “Firstly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to distinguished guests for gracing this occasion with your presence. Your generosity and commitment to education have made a significant impact on our school and we are forever grateful.”

She listed some of the improvements made to the school, including a solar-powered computer lab set up by CITAD, two motorized boreholes, and classroom renovations. Another computer lab powered by solar energy was also provided through a digital skills program.

On academic results, the principal said the school had recorded steady performance over the last four years. “From the year 2020 to 2024, we achieved more than 70% in both WAEC and NECO because more than 70% of our students who sat for their final exams had the number of credits making the minimum requirements needed for admission into various universities in the country and even abroad.”

She added that some students scored above 250 in JAMB, while others distinguished themselves in competitions. “Three of our students just emerged 1st positions in different categories at the recently conducted MusaBaka in Gwale zone,” she said.

Despite the progress, the principal noted that the school still faces critical infrastructure challenges.

“Our growing population has created a need for additional blocks of classrooms and halls for effective learning and examination purposes,” she said. “There is also the need for science and technical labs to harness the entrepreneurial minds of our students for their future sustenance.”
