Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has confirmed that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the 2027 presidential election.

He made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television on Monday night.

“As far as this politics is concerned, they (ADC) don’t exist. The information available to me is that any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP,” he said.

Recall that PDP elder statesman and founding member, Professor Jerry Gana, had said days ago that the party had opened dialogue with Obi and other prominent southern politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gana, a former Minister of Information, noted that the PDP is seeking to reposition itself and that internal reflections on past presidential primaries are influencing current strategic moves.

Rumours of Obi’s possible return to the PDP gathered momentum after reports emerged that the party may zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

Fueling the speculation further, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, recently described Obi as a valuable asset.

“Peter Obi is our product. We want to get him back, indeed, because he is a very, very great capital for any political party,” Abdullahi said.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, came third in the 2023 presidential election, trailing President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He is believed to be part of an opposition coalition that includes Atiku, Nasir El-Rufai, and other political heavyweights ahead of the next general election.

The coalition is housed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
