Despite Nigeria’s collapsed economy, political elite obsessed with convoys, jets – Utomi

Renowned political economist, Pat Utomi has condemned the ostentatious lifestyle lived by most Nigerian politicians.

Utomi while speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday said Nigeria is currently collapsing under the weight of untold hardships, leadership failure, institutional decay and insecurity bedevilling regions of the country.

He also described Nigeria’s current economic situation as a crisis that needs urgent action.

He called for responsible leadership among the nation’s political elite.

Utomi also condemned the fact that Nigerian politicians can afford to ride is luxury cars and live ostentatiously while citizens live in abject penury.

“The rural economy has collapsed. Farmers can’t farm, and yet our political elite are obsessed with convoys, jets and SUVs. It’s morally bankrupt,” Utomi said.

He further called for reforms of various policies across the country including land tenure laws, support for agro-processing clusters to address some of these challenges.

On insecurity ravaging that nation, Utomi stated that poverty has made several people vulnerable to recruitment by terrorists and criminals.

He called for state policing with a view to decentralising the already existing system.
