In other news, A graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has shared how a lecturer allegedly delayed his graduation by a year, despite having official permission to represent the school at the 2013 Nigerian University Games (NUGA).
The story was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Daniel (@ifdanieldid), who called out the lecturer, Mr. Oludele Thomas, labeling him “wicked” over what he described as an unfair academic experience.
Daniel revealed that he missed a field trip for ESM 315, a 1-unit course, because he was competing in NUGA, where he won a gold medal for FUTA. Although he presented an exemption letter signed by the university senate, the lecturer allegedly insisted that his class was “more important” and failed him.
When Daniel returned for his extra year to retake the course, he claimed Mr. Thomas told him to carry chairs from an old building to a new one located uphill before he could pass.
“In my extra year, he said I had to pack chairs across campus to pass the course even after I told him I wasn’t feeling well,” Daniel wrote.
He also recalled another incident during his 500-level year when he was chosen as one of three Nigerians to attend the Global Youth Consultation for the World Humanitarian Summit in Qatar. The program coincided with his final paper (ESM 502), and he chose the international opportunity over the exam despite warnings from his department.
Daniel explained that the experience abroad ended up being more valuable than his degree.
“To those lecturers back then, we were just a bunch of young, dumb teenagers they could push around. They forgot kids grow up fast, and we don’t forget. And we’re doing much better economically,” he wrote.
He noted that he graduated a year late in 2016 and has only visited FUTA once since then. According to him, he has never collected his BSc certificate, which he believes is still lying somewhere in the Senate building.
Daniel ended his viral post with a direct message to the lecturer:
“Mr Thomas… you did me dirty, man. You’re wicked. And you deserve whatever you get.”
His post quickly sparked reactions online, with many users sharing similar experiences and criticizing the abuse of power by some university lecturers.
