Officials from the Kano State Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources on Monday visited a mining site in Zainabi village, Doguwa Local Government Area, as part of efforts to attract formal investment into the state’s solid minerals sector.
The delegation included representatives from a Chinese firm, Lanhai Mining Company Limited, and Santago Nigeria Limited, which holds the mining cadaster licence for the site.
Director of Mines, Muhammad Bala, who represented the Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Hamza Safiyanu Kachako, said the visit aimed to evaluate the site’s potential and address the challenges posed by unregulated artisanal mining.
“The activities of informal miners have created environmental concerns in the area,” Bala said. “We believe regulated investment will improve safety and bring economic benefits to the host community.”
Director of Environmental Protection, Control, and Safety, Alhaji Sha’aya’u Jibrin, said the government had directed artisanal miners to stop encroaching into residential areas and begin reclaiming excavated sites with appropriate soil to allow for reforestation with economic trees.
Alen Zhang, Project Manager of Lanhai Mining Company Limited, said the company was interested in the site and would move forward with operations once agreements with the licence holder were concluded.
“We are impressed with the mineral presence here and are ready to begin once all arrangements are finalized,” Zhang stated.
Malam Sa’idu Isyaku Maye, a representative of Santago Nigeria Limited, confirmed the company’s willingness to collaborate with the Chinese firm.
The visit was confirmed in a statement signed by Adamu Ibrahim Dabo, Director of Public Enlightenment at the ministry, who noted that several senior ministry officials participated in the inspection.
