Former Kogi West senator and 2023 governorship candidate, Dino Melaye has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), just hours after announcing his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Kogi State chapter of the ADC presented Melaye with a party membership card on Wednesday, confirming his new affiliation and stating that he had been quietly supporting the party long before making his move public.

Melaye’s defection puts an end to months of speculation about his political future, following internal disagreements within the PDP and his recent criticism of the party’s direction.

Earlier today, he submitted a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1 in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, citing the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and rescue Nigeria from what he described as “prevailing political cankerworms.”

Melaye is a known ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also left the PDP earlier this month. Both are now expected to play prominent roles in strengthening the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His defection marks a significant shift in Kogi State’s political landscape, as the ADC positions itself to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP.
