Speaking from his Lagos home, the distraught father described the incident as a heartbreaking and unexpected tragedy.
“I was brought back to Nigeria after working abroad for years. I regret coming home,” he said with deep sorrow.
The incident began on June 26 when officers from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team allegedly arrested his younger son, Kenneth Arhagba, over a property dispute. The family said they were unaware of Kenneth’s location for several days until they were asked to bring food to the Ajeromi police station.
Kingsley, who was the primary caregiver to his aged father, reportedly went to the station to deliver the food but was allegedly detained by the officers.
According to the family, police demanded that a civil servant on grade level 12 must be present to secure Kenneth’s release. When the family could not meet this requirement, they offered property documents as an alternative.
During the process, tragedy occurred.
A church deacon who accompanied the family said he found Kingsley unconscious while in police custody. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The officers who transported him to the facility reportedly left shortly after, claiming they had gone to inflate their vehicle’s tyres.
“They have taken my son from me. Kingsley was the one caring for me. I have nothing left,” the grieving father lamented.
The family also alleged that Kenneth was later transferred to Abuja and accused of kidnapping. He claims he was held for four days without food or access to his family.
The Arhagba family has since petitioned the Inspector General of Police, calling for a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, police sources have denied the allegations, insisting that Kingsley collapsed in the presence of family members and not inside the police cell.
