The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned that the water level at Bakin Kogi in Jimeta, Adamawa State, has exceeded the warning threshold of 6.0 metres, posing an imminent risk of flooding in the area.
This was revealed in a statement posted on the agency’s X handle on Wednesday, which emphasized that “Low-lying areas of Jimeta and surrounding flood prone communities are under immediate threat.”
With the current discharge rates from upstream sources exceeding 3,222 m³/s, the operation office of NEMA in Yola has placed disaster response units on high alert, “The NEMA Yola Operations Office is closely monitoring the situation and has activated coordination with Disaster Response Units (DRUs) and other relevant stakeholders to prepare for possible evacuation and relief operations,” The statement partly reads.
The emergency management agency further emphasized that it is crucial for residents to heed official instructions at this time.
“Displaced persons have already sought refuge at Limawa and Gwadabawa Secondary Schools” it added.
