The Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, has apprehended and sanctioned 128 residents and 20 companies for environmental offenses and indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.
The residents were sentenced to hours of community service in Sango-Ota, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode, Papalanto and Abeokuta.
DAILY POST learnt that they were caught disposing their wastes on median and public places, while the companies were sanctioned after their trucks were caught disposing wastes on road verges along the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Abeokuta expressways.
The Managing Director of OGWAMA, Abayomi Hunye disclosed that the residents and trucks of the companies were apprehended by the authority’s Enforcement Squad while committing the offense.
He said, “What is of concern is the fact that those apprehended where deliberately determined to sabotage the state government efforts at keeping the state clean at all times as it was discovered that they refused to patronize the government approved waste collectors in their communities and their companies for no just cause.
“Their attitude is not just an affront to lawful government orders but deliberately endangering the health and safety of other law-abiding residents of the state who have imbibed the spirit of proper waste disposal and management for a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.”
Hunye assured that the enforcement team of the authority would keep an eye on the roadside and public areas in order to catch offenders, particularly during the rainy season when waste disposed in an insensitive manner contributes to flooding and contaminates subterranean water.
