FG inaugurates panel to investigate Abuja–Kaduna train derailment

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has set up an investigation committee to ascertain the cause of the recent train derailment on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor and to propose measures to prevent a recurrence.

The decision follows the derailment of a train on August 26, 2025, near Jerre, while en route from Abuja to Kaduna.

According to a statement by Janet McDickson Noah, Director of Press and Information, the minister directed that a committee comprising all relevant stakeholders be constituted to examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.

The committee will also recommend preventive measures and identify strategies to enhance the safety and efficiency of rail transportation in Nigeria.

Expressing concern for passenger safety, Alkali appointed Musa O. Ibrahim as chair of the committee.

Other members include Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu; Engr. Zirra Finbar; Barr. Omotola Olusegun (as secretary); Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation; Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe; and representatives of Technics Engineering, Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd, CCECC, and civil society organisations, as well as male and female passengers.
