Twelve people have died in a canoe mishap while trying to escape from bandits in Zamfara State.

This was contained in a post shared by a security analyst, Zagazola Makama on Sunday.

According to Makama, the tragedy happened on Friday evening at Danmaga village in Gummi Local Government Area

Makama stated that residents reported seeing a group of armed bandits driving stolen animals toward Birnin Magaji district and that, “In panic, some women and children quickly boarded a canoe to cross a river to safety.

“During the process, the canoe capsized, leading to the death of 12 victims, while more than 20 persons were rescued alive,” Makama wrote.

Security personnel, alongside local divers, retrieved the victims’ bodies, which were subsequently laid to rest in line with Islamic rites.

Efforts to recover any other possible victims were still underway.
