The Cross River State Police Command has detained a young woman named Ms Arit Etim Ukorebi, who was accused of stealing ₦16 million from her employer, D’fun Enterprise in Ikom.

Ukorebi was reportedly arrested last week Friday following a complaint by her employer, identified as Mrs Funke, the owner of the company.

The police have reportedly debarred Ukorebi from accessing members of her family or lawyers.

In reaction, an NGO, The Citizens’ Solution Network has submitted a petition dated dated 6 September 2025 to the state Commissioner of Police, frowning against cutting her off family members and lawyers.

The organisation has called for an investigation into the matter while demanding that the fundamental human rights of the accused be respected.
.
The Country Director of the network who signed the petition, Mr Richard Inoyo alleged that police personnel at Okuni Police Station in Ikom, who arrested the suspect, denied the young woman access to her family since her detention on Friday.

The group stressed that investigations must be conducted within the provisions of the law, cautioning against torturing, intimidating, or violating any of her fundamental rights.

“We are asking that the young girl not be tortured or brutalised in the name of investigation.

“We are calling on the police leadership to ask the personnel in Okuni Police Station to uphold the Anti-Torture Act of 2017,” part of the petition read.
