The Presidency on Monday provided an update on the health condition of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, said Edun had assured him that he was recovering well.
Posting on X, Dare stated that the minister gave him the assurance during a phone call.
He wrote: “Moments ago I got off the phone with Nigeria’s Finance Minister / COE Mr. Wale Edun in Abuja. Over a bowl of Amala, we spoke for a few minutes with assurances he was getting better. I wished him the best of health. Sunday Dare Alamala Reporting. @OfficialAPCNg.”
On Sunday, Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Edun, who is the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, was recuperating at his Abuja residence after falling ill.
Onanuga dismissed rumours that Edun had suffered a stroke or had been flown abroad for treatment.
“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga said.
This clarification followed speculation that President Tinubu was considering replacing Edun after reports of his ill health emerged late last week.
Earlier, the Presidency had confirmed that Edun would not attend the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.
It added that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, would lead Nigeria’s delegation in his stead.
