In the latest update of the FIFA men’s world rankings, Nigeria has climbed to 38th position.
FIFA explained that the changes in the rankings were influenced by results from inter-confederation fixtures as well as the conclusion of the final qualification round for the 2026 World Cup.
Nigeria’s 4–1 victory over Gabon and their 1–1 draw with DR Congo, who edged them 4–3 on penalties in the African play-offs, played a key role in the improved ranking.
Morocco remain Africa’s highest-ranked team with 1,713.12 points, followed by Senegal in 19th place on 1,648.07 points. Egypt are ranked 34th with 1,520.68 points, just ahead of Algeria in 35th with 1,516.37 points.
Although Nigeria did not secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup, their recent performances were strong enough to elevate them in the global standings.
The Super Eagles now have 1,502.46 points, placing them fifth in Africa behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria.
Nigeria are narrowly ahead of Tunisia, who sit in 40th with 1,497.13 points, and maintain an even wider margin over Ivory Coast and DR Congo, who have 1,489.59 and 1,442.50 points respectively.
In contrast, Morocco’s lead over Nigeria stands at a significant 210.66 points.
Spain continue to hold the top spot in the world rankings, with Argentina and France following closely. Brazil have moved up two places to fifth after a string of strong performances, causing shifts in positions for several other teams.
Attention now turns to the Africa Cup of Nations in December, where the Super Eagles will battle for continental supremacy in a highly competitive field that includes higher-ranked opponents such as Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria.
