Gov Idris demands probe into military withdrawal before school abduction

The Kebbi State Government has called for an investigation into the removal of military personnel from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga just an hour before bandits attacked the school and kidnapped 25 students.

On Friday Governor Nasir Idris issued the request during a meeting with the Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle at the government house, in Birnin Kebbi.

The minister visited the state following instructions from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who commanded him to move to Kebbi and oversee the rescue efforts, for the kidnapped girls.

In a declaration, Governor Idris challenged the army for pulling back the troops.

He asked, “What was the reason the military staff assigned to the college left their duty post by 3:00am allowing the bandits to assault the school by 4:00am? Consequently I am urging the minister to conduct an investigation, into why the military retreated at such a critical time despite intelligence indicating a probable attack.”

He stated that the state obtained intelligence about an assault on the school and held an urgent security meeting resulting in the dispatch of personnel, to the site. He voiced worry that despite having this intelligence the attackers encountered no opposition at the moment.

Matawalle revealed that he came accompanied by the Theatre Commander of Operation Fantsan Yamma, Maj.-Gen. Idris Warrah, along, with high-ranking military officials to bolster the current initiatives.

“We have gathered here to collaborate with security organizations to guarantee the safe recovery of these girls. Consequently we are requesting the assistance and backing of the community and residents of Kebbi ” he stated.
