The governor of Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, ending his long association with the party that brought him to power in 2018 and again in 2022.
In a terse resignation letter dated 4 November 2025 and addressed to the PDP Ward 2 Chairman, Sagba-Abogunde, Ede North Local Government Area, the governor cited the protracted leadership crisis at the national level as the primary reason for his departure.
“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” the letter read.
Adeleke, who personally signed the document made public on yesterday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platform that enabled him to serve as Senator for Osun West (2015–2019) and twice as governor.
The resignation, kept under wraps for nearly a month, has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political circles.
Sources close to the governor indicate the decision was taken after exhaustive consultations and reflects deep frustration with the intractable power struggle between factions loyal to Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and those backing suspended former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, alongside broader dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.
As of the time of the resignation Governor Adeleke had not announced any plan to join another political party.
The Osun PDP state secretariat has yet to issue an official reaction, but party insiders described the development as “a devastating blow” to the opposition platform in one of its few remaining strongholds.
