Former acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has formally handed over leadership to the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), following the expiry of his tenure on 8 December 2025.
The handover ceremony took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, marking a transition after a prolonged leadership tussle between Damagum’s faction and the group led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
During the event, Damagum commended the new NWC and stressed their responsibility to restore unity within the party. He said, “The beauty of it is that we were able to surmount all the obstacles that we faced, and we will continue to surmount them.”
He described the PDP as “still the party to beat” and highlighted its resilience despite challenges, stating, “That’s why they lose sleep about PDP. They keep putting different hurdles in our way, but God will see us through. We are positive. God is a just God; He does not support injustice.”
Damagum also addressed ongoing crises within the party, warning that those perpetuating discord may experience temporary respite but will ultimately face the consequences of their actions.
In response, Tanimu Turaki, the new National Chairman, expressed appreciation for the efforts of the outgoing NWC under Damagum’s leadership. He reassured party members of his commitment to advancing the PDP’s agenda and fostering unity across all factions.
The PDP, Nigeria’s major opposition party, has faced recurring internal leadership struggles in recent years, often resulting in legal battles and parallel party structures. Analysts note that smooth transitions such as Tuesday’s handover are critical to consolidating the party’s position ahead of upcoming elections.
The leadership handover underscores the PDP’s ongoing efforts to project stability and cohesion while addressing internal disputes. Party officials have emphasised that Turaki’s committee will prioritise reconciliation, grassroots mobilisation, and strengthening the party’s presence nationwide.
As the new NWC assumes office, party supporters and political observers are closely monitoring its ability to manage internal divisions and maintain the PDP’s role as a formidable opposition force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
