Following Mohamed Salah’s strong public remarks, former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has said the Liverpool star is harming his own legacy at the club.
According to New Daily Prime, Salah had voiced frustration over his limited playing time after being left out for more than three straight matches.
Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney insisted that Liverpool manager Arne Slot must assert his authority by leaving the Egyptian forward out of both Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan and next Saturday’s Premier League match at home to Brighton.
“Arne Slot needs to stand firm and tell him, ‘You’re not travelling with the squad. What you said was unacceptable,’” Rooney said on his recent podcast.
“Go off to AFCON and let things settle. If I were the manager, there’s no chance he would be in the team.”
Rooney added that Salah must resolve his issues with Slot or consider moving on from Liverpool altogether.
“This has to be cleared up quickly, one way or the other.”
He questioned why Salah who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 chose to speak out publicly in the first place.
“He’s ruining his legacy at Liverpool,” said the five-time Premier League champion. “It would be a shame for him to throw all of that away. He’s handled this the wrong way.”
Meanwhile, speculation continues over whether Salah will be included in the squad for the Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
Sources close to the club say his remarks have sparked internal debate over whether he should start or even be part of the matchday lineup. No formal decision has been announced, and Liverpool is expected to reveal the squad nearer to kickoff.
Salah, currently not in his best form of the season, has scored only four goals in 13 Premier League appearances so far.
