Popular Nigerian comedian Klint Da Drunk has opened up about the turning point that made him switch from pursuing a music career to becoming one of the country’s most recognisable comedy acts.
In a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, the entertainer shared how a single moment on his school campus convinced him that music was not his destined path.
Klint Da Drunk, whose real name is Afamefuna Igwemba, recalled that he was actively pursuing music while studying at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) in Enugu.
At the time, he was deeply invested in building a future as a musician, writing songs, performing, and collaborating with fellow students.
However, everything changed the day he watched legendary singer 2Face Idibia, now known as 2Baba, perform live at an event on campus.
According to him, 2Face had only recently gained admission into IMT, and the event was one of his early performances at the school.
Klint narrated that he was scheduled to perform at the same event and was in fact encouraged by the organisers to wait and take the stage after the singer. But the moment 2Face started singing, everything shifted.
“I used to be a musician until 2Face got admitted to my school, IMT,” he said. “One day when he got on stage to perform at an event on campus, I left the hall. The organisers pleaded with me to stay back and perform when he is done. I accepted, but after hearing him sing just two lines, I went home.”
Klint explained that hearing 2Face’s voice made him realise instantly that music might not be his strongest path. What he initially interpreted as intimidation later became a moment of clarity.
He added that he had not understood that his style and 2Face’s style were completely different, and that he could have continued if he had recognised that difference. Still, he believes everything worked out for the best.
“I didn’t know that my style and 2Face’s style were different. If I had known, I would continue making music. But thank God I didn’t continue. I like where I am,” he added.
Despite walking away from music, Klint Da Drunk’s early involvement in the industry remains notable. He featured in the hit Nigerian hip-hop track Obodo by rapper Mr Raw and even co-founded a music group with the rapper before shifting fully into comedy.
The group later competed in the 2002 edition of the Star Quest talent show, where they finished second, losing to the duo KC Presh.
Klint’s transition to comedy became a defining moment for his career. Over the years, he built a strong reputation with his signature drunken-persona stage performance, earning widespread recognition across Nigeria.
His success in comedy eventually opened doors into Nollywood, where he featured in more than a dozen films, including Men On The Run, Madam 10/10, Fast Cash, and Lost Kingdom.
Today, Klint Da Drunk remains grateful for the unexpected twist that led him away from music. What started as a discouraging moment has transformed into a flourishing comedy career that has spanned decades.
