The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 27 local government areas of Borno State following the local council elections held on December 13, according to official results released by the state’s electoral body. and made available to the New Daily Prime.
The outcome was formally announced on Monday in Maiduguri by Tahiru Shettima, chairman of the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC), during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters. Shettima said the list of chairmen-elect, earlier declared by returning officers in their respective local government areas, had now been aggregated and confirmed by the commission.
Shettima said BOSIEC conducted the elections without placing any obstacles in the way of political parties willing to participate, insisting that the process was open and inclusive. He noted that despite several stakeholder meetings and preparations ahead of the polls, only six political parties eventually took part in the elections.
“I think the commission has done its best, and the election was free, fair, inclusive and transparent,” Shettima said.
He added that all returning officers deployed by BOSIEC were individuals of proven integrity and competence, drawn largely from academic institutions and the technocratic community.
“Our returning officers are people of high integrity and high intellectual capacity. BOSIEC headquarters simply collated the results submitted by the returning officers and electoral officers across the 27 local government areas. Our responsibility today was to formally announce the list of elected chairmen,” he explained.
Shettima said the successful completion of the exercise demonstrated that the elections were keenly contested at the local level, despite the eventual clean sweep recorded by the ruling party. He urged the newly elected council chairmen to focus on grassroots development and the delivery of essential social services.

He also pointed to voter participation as evidence of the importance residents attach to local government administration. According to him, the turnout reflected the closeness of local councils to the people and showed that citizens at the grassroots remain interested in political engagement at that level.
“The local government is closest to the people, and the turnout shows that the grassroots population is interested in participating in governance,” he said.
The BOSIEC chairman commended the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their role in maintaining peace and ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections across the state.
The December 13 polls were contested by six political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Labour Party (LP) and the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
Borno State, which has faced prolonged security challenges linked to insurgency, has in recent years placed emphasis on strengthening local governance structures as part of broader efforts to stabilise communities and improve service delivery.
The results further consolidate the APC’s dominance in the state’s political landscape, following its strong showing in previous elections at both state and federal levels.
