The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dissolved the executives of 14 state chapters of the party and announced plans to conduct fresh congresses in January 2026.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the faction’s Caretaker Committee held on Thursday evening in Abuja, according to a statement issued after the meeting. The faction reaffirmed that the leadership of Mohammed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as Acting National Secretary remains, in its view, the only legitimate national structure of the party.

The move has further deepened the leadership crisis within the PDP, which has been sharply divided since the party’s contentious national convention and subsequent disputes over succession and authority at the national level.

The Acting Publicity Secretary of the faction disclosed that the state chapters affected by the dissolution are Borno, Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Delta, Taraba, Kano and Lagos.

“To tell the teeming members of our party and the general public that the PDP remains strong and indivisible. There is only one genuine and legitimate PDP, headed by Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed,” the statement read in part.

The development comes despite the position of PDP governors, who had earlier endorsed the Ibadan national convention held on November 16, where former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were elected for a four-year tenure.

Although the governors reportedly ensured a smooth transition from former National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to Turaki ahead of the official end of Damagum’s tenure on December 9, the Wike-aligned faction rejected the Ibadan convention. Instead, it proceeded on December 8 to appoint Abdulrahman, Anyanwu and others as members of a 60-day caretaker committee.

During the caretaker period, the faction said all outstanding congresses would be conducted and a national convention convened. While Turaki has continued to hold meetings with party leaders in his capacity as national chairman, the Abdulrahman–Anyanwu caretaker committee has also been carrying out parallel party activities.

The dissolution of state executives and announcement of fresh congresses signal an escalation of the internal power struggle, raising fresh concerns about the PDP’s unity and preparedness ahead of future electoral contests.
