Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamondi has said a victory over Nigeria would be as meaningful as lifting the Africa Cup of Nations, as his team hopes to end their long wait for a first-ever win at the continental tournament.
The Taifa Stars will face the Super Eagles on Tuesday in Morocco at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, in what will be only the second AFCON meeting between both nations. Their first encounter came 45 years ago during the 1980 tournament.
Tanzania made their AFCON debut in 1980, hosted by Nigeria, but endured a difficult campaign, losing all three group games. Their opening match ended in a 3–1 defeat to Nigeria, followed by losses to Egypt and Ivory Coast.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Gamondi stressed the importance of belief and ambition.

“It’s our dream, and no one can stop us from dreaming,” he said. “If you don’t dream, there is no reason to sleep. I have great respect for Nigeria, but football is unpredictable. We are here to put in a strong performance.”
While acknowledging Nigeria’s experience and history, the Argentine coach made it clear Tanzania would not surrender before kickoff.
“I am realistic about our chances. Nigeria may have 99 per cent in their favour, but football always leaves room for surprises,” he explained. “If we do what is required and manage to win, it would feel like winning the AFCON for us, especially at the beginning of the competition.”
After their opening match against Nigeria, Tanzania will take on Uganda in their second Group C fixture on Friday, before rounding off the group stage against Tunisia next Tuesday.
The two sides last met during the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, drawing 0–0 in Dar es Salaam before Nigeria secured a narrow 1–0 win in the return leg in Uyo on September 3, 2016.
