Alexander Isak has suffered another major injury setback after undergoing surgery on a fracture to his left leg, Liverpool Football Club have confirmed.
The Sweden international was forced off during Saturday’s match against Tottenham after being injured in a challenge from Micky van de Ven shortly after scoring. Isak was unable to continue and was substituted soon after the incident.
According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, Liverpool revealed that Isak “successfully underwent surgery” on an ankle injury which included a fractured fibula. While the club has not given an exact return date, the 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined for several months.
Isak joined Liverpool in the summer for a Premier League record fee of £125 million. Since his arrival from Newcastle United in September, he has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.
The injury represents the latest setback in a challenging period for the striker, who previously thrived under Eddie Howe at Newcastle, scoring 23 Premier League goals before his move.
During the summer, Isak was also left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to what was described as a minor thigh injury, amid growing uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.
