A Nigerian lady has sparked debate on social media after explaining why she believes men are responsible for the high standards many women now have in relationships.

In a video shared by honest30bgfan on X (formerly Twitter), the woman argued that women did not suddenly wake up one day and raise their expectations—men did.

“Men are the ones who set high standards for other men. I once met a man who paid for my meal and also sent me ₦500,000 that same day,” she said.

Sharing her experience, she revealed that the man didn’t just take her out but went the extra mile by showing generosity on the same day they met.

She questioned why anyone would expect her to lower her standards after such an encounter. “Do you expect me to settle for less after that?” she asked.

Her comments quickly stirred reactions online, with many users divided over whether such experiences are helping or hurting modern dating expectations.

One commenter wrote, “This is why dating is hard now,” while another added, “Once you see better, it’s hard to go back.”

The conversation has once again reopened discussions around money, expectations, and realism in relationships, with many agreeing on one thing: experiences often shape standards whether people like it or not.
