A Nigerian clergyman has cautioned men against allowing their wives to shoulder the financial burden of the home for an extended period, warning that such situations can negatively affect marriages if not properly managed.
In his message, the cleric emphasized that while many women may appear supportive and willing to help financially, prolonged responsibility can place emotional and psychological strain on the marriage.

Women not naturally equipped to bear financial burden
He noted that women are often not naturally equipped to carry the primary financial role long-term, even when they love and support their spouses.
According to him, many men going through financial challenges experience intense stress but lack the emotional intelligence or communication skills to express it properly, which can further strain the relationship.
He explained that this phase can be particularly sensitive for men, making intentional financial rebuilding crucial.
Clergyman urges men to improve their finance
The clergyman stressed that men must be deliberate about improving their financial stability and fulfilling their responsibility as providers, describing it as both a personal duty and a moral obligation.
He added that failure to provide for one’s household can have serious consequences for family stability and marital harmony.
His words in part …
“I don’t care how supportive your wife is, if she carries the financial burden of the house for too long, it will take a toll on your marriage. I don’t care how supportive she is or how much she loves you. Because one, she is not built for it and unfortunately some men do not have the wisdom required in that phase of their relationship. They are feeling genuine stress but they don’t know how to communicate it well. Because at that phase in the life of a man, he is more sensitive than ever. So, as a man you have to be intentional about building your finances. Whether you like it or not you have to provide. God has put you in that space. The scripture says that a man who cannot provide for his family is worse than an infidel.”
