Two suspected robbers were reportedly lynched by a mob on Sunday morning in Calabar, Cross River State capital.
Police authorities said they could not immediately identify the robbers but warned against jungle justice.
The incident occurred along Ekpo Abasi road, near Yellow Duke Street in Calabar South LGA.
It was gathered that the robbers may have been lynched while attempting to snatch mobile phones from residents as the area is notorious for petty and armed robbery attacks.
A statement from the police spokesman, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said preliminary information indicated that the two men were allegedly apprehended and attacked by a mob after they were suspected of being involved in a robbery.
Akata disclosed that police operatives have visited the scene and documented the incident.
“We have commenced preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the deceased.
“The remains have been evacuated from the scene with the assistance of the relevant local government authorities for appropriate preservation.”
The command urged members of the public to desist from jungle justice and always hand suspected offenders over to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution.
The police warned that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
