Hunter Biden has revealed how former President Joe Biden repeatedly tried to reach him during one of the darkest periods of his addiction. During an appearance on the addiction podcast “Dopey,” Hunter recalled his father arriving at his Washington, D.C., home in an official motorcade while serving as vice president.
5Hunter said his father came to the house twice and personally knocked on the door after struggling to reach him by phone. “My dad showed up. He literally showed up at the house twice, you know, and just knocked on the door,” Hunter told podcast host David Manheim.
At the time, Hunter was living with a woman nicknamed “Bicycles,” whom he had reportedly approached to sell him crack and teach him how to smoke it. She later moved into the home. When Manheim asked whether his father ever encountered his roommate, Hunter responded, “I think he ran into her.”
Hunter described hearing the vehicles approaching before looking outside and seeing his father’s motorcade. “I mean, again and again. He’d call, and he’d call, and then… he literally would drive over with a motorcade. You know what I mean? Like as small as he could possibly make it.”
The former president’s son said the security presence could not be completely eliminated because Joe was vice president at the time. “I’d look out my window because I’d hear all these cars and you’d see like six SUVs pull up and my dad get out and walk with one or two [Secret Service] guys because they have to be next to him,” he revealed.
According to Hunter, his father tried to figure out what to do next. He recalled Joe asking, “‘Please, like, what are we gonna do tomorrow? What’s the plan?’ And I’d say, I got a plan, and this is what it is.”
Hunter Biden Remembers His Time At Chateau Marmont
5Hunter eventually left Washington and traveled to Los Angeles in 2018, where he checked into the Chateau Marmont. “I come out to LA, and I check into the Chateau Marmont,” he recalled. “[It’s] 100% like right out of a movie. That’s the spot… and I live in one of the bungalows for about close to two months.”
Manheim mentioned that actor John Belushi died of an overdose at the hotel in 1982. Hunter admitted the tragedy remained on his mind during his own stay. “Exactly. Yeah, which was always in the forefront of my mind,” he said. “I mean, I think I went more than anything because I was like, ‘hey, might as well go out with a bang.’”
Hunter, who is now sober, described his actions at the time as a less direct attempt to end his life, explaining, “I was trying to commit suicide without having the courage to do it in a very direct route, like I mean, who else does that other than somebody that knows that they want to?”
In his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things,” Hunter wrote about searching the hotel’s rugs for drugs. He reportedly admitted to once smoking parmesan cheese because he believed it was crack. Hunter also wrote that he learned to cook crack during his time at the hotel and became “absurdly good at it.”
Hotel Employees Allegedly Tried To Protect Hunter Biden
5Despite the circumstances surrounding his stay, Hunter said several Chateau Marmont employees treated him with compassion. “All of it was crazy, and even in those moments, it’s just the kindness of certain people,” he said. “I mean people at the Chateau at the time. There was a bellman and the guys that parked the cars. Like I still know those guys to this day because they protected me, and they were kind to me.”
Hunter said his life became progressively darker after leaving the hotel. He recalled staying in motels and spending time with people who would not immediately confront him about his addiction.
The former president’s son said he lived alongside “drug dealers to prostitutes to sex workers,” which he described as “the groups of people that … the only people that you can be around that don’t immediately like say, ‘you need to either be in prison or in you know or in treatment or [it’s] your fault.”
“So that’s who you find, and that’s who I lived with for two years, and it started right at the Chateau,” he continued. “And then it ended up in more motels and really dark places, and dives, and then I would go back… a check would come in from somewhere.”
The Chateau Marmont reportedly declined to comment on Hunter’s account.
Hunter Biden Discusses How He Funded His Addiction
5Manheim also questioned Hunter about how he continued paying for hotels and drugs. “How did you scrape the money together for it?” the host asked. “You never went broke?”
“I never went broke… Well, I still had the residual. Like, for instance, I still was on the board of Burisma,” Hunter replied.
Hunter said he had previously held positions on approximately “14 boards” involving “major national and international organizations.” He also worked as “of counsel for [famed law firm] Boies Schiller.”
Hunter Biden Admits He Remained On Burisma’s Board During Addiction Struggles
5He acknowledged that he remained on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma while struggling with addiction. “I took that when my dad was vice president, and then for three years after I was still on the board,” he said.
“And the requirement of the board would be that I would show up for four meetings a year, even when I was a crack addict and out of my mind. I could show up for four meetings a year,” Hunter added.
Burisma was dissolved in 2023.
