Femi Adesina, the former presidential spokesman, expressed surprise at the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, believing he still had at least another decade of life ahead.

In a Facebook tribute, Adesina described Buhari as “a soldier of soldiers, an officer and a gentleman,” whose influence will continue to shape Nigeria.

“I didn’t expect President Buhari to leave us, at least not for another 10 years,” he wrote. Though he was 82, Adesina thought Buhari could live to 92 or beyond. He recalled Buhari’s 2017 health scare, which solidified his belief in the former president’s resilience.

Adesina shared memories from their last meeting during Ramadan at Buhari’s home, where they enjoyed a meal together, unaware it would be their final encounter. Buhari passed away on July 13, 2025, in London after a period of illness and was buried two days later in a private ceremony in Kaduna.

Adesina noted Buhari’s preference for simplicity in life and death, mentioning his resting place in the courtyard where he often reflected. He highlighted Buhari’s dedication to integrity and fairness, quoting him on the importance of making decisions based on merit.

“Buhari was not perfect,” Adesina acknowledged, “but he was honest and devoted to the people. Nigeria has lost a steadfast leader.” Having served as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity throughout Buhari’s administration, Adesina’s admiration for him deepened over the years.
