Federal govt alerts 11 states over imminent flood risk in July

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued an early warning alert predicting that eleven Nigerian states may experience flooding between July 16 and 20, 2025.

The alert, released through the National Flood Early Warning System (FEWS Centre) in Abuja, was signed by Usman Abdullahi, director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

The ministry urged state governments and other relevant stakeholders to take immediate precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of possible flood disasters.

According to the circular, parts of Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Bauchi, Plateau, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Cross River, and Zamfara are expected to witness heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding.

The ministry called on local government officials and emergency responders to remain alert and provide timely updates, while urging communities in the affected areas to relocate from flood-prone zones and maintain environmental hygiene to reduce risks.
