Tension flared at the Akure Customary Court as Mrs. Folakemi Adebayo publicly accused her former husband, Emmanuel Oyebanji, and the lawyer who handled their divorce case of betrayal.

As reported by Hope Newspaper, Folakemi burst into the courtroom in tears, alleging that the lawyer who once claimed impartiality had secretly tied the knot with her ex-husband.

“She ruined my settlement! I trusted her to be neutral, not sleeping with my husband!” she exclaimed, insisting the lawyer had begun a romantic relationship with Emmanuel before the divorce was finalized.

Folakemi also accused the lawyer of manipulating the proceedings for personal gain, which she claimed left her disadvantaged in the divorce outcome. She appealed to the court to review the case and probe the lawyer for ethical misconduct.

In his defense, Emmanuel denied the allegations, stating: “She moved out and left me alone. I only found comfort in someone who understood what I was going through.” He maintained that his relationship with the lawyer began only after the divorce was completed.

The lawyer, who was present in court, also dismissed the claims. “My dealings with Mr Emmanuel were purely professional during the case. There was nothing unethical between us and I am not guilty of any misconduct,” she said firmly as murmurs filled the courtroom.

After listening to both sides, Judge Ireti Sunday ruled that the court could not act based on allegations alone. “This court cannot act on suspicion alone. There is no evidence before this court to prove any conspiracy or professional misconduct between Mr Emmanuel and the lawyer during the divorce process,” the judge said.

The case was subsequently dismissed.
