Mutfwang said this shortly after inspecting the ongoing remodelling project at the stadium on Friday in Jos.

The governor said that the huge funds needed to complete the Zaria Road stadium necessitated the ongoing remodelling of the township one.

“We decided to embark on this project in order to raise the profile of soccer in Plateau.

“It is our expectation that at the end of this redevelopment, we’ll be able to host even matches of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) here.

“We started this remodelling because the Zaria road stadium will require much bigger attention than finances.

“And since we are not yet prepared for that, we thought that we should concentrate efforts on this stadium,” he said.

The governor, who expressed satisfaction with the level and quality of work so far, said that the project would be completed by November.

He also said that the stadium, when completed, would lay ground for all kinds of sporting activities, including indoors sports.

Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who accompanied the governor on the inspection, commended the state government for the initiative.

Gusau noted that upon completion, the stadium would promote the game of soccer and grassroots sports in the state.

He added that the facility would be a good pitch that even the national team could use for its matches.

“I’m highly impressed with what I’m seeing here; I didn’t expect the job to be this huge, and it has reached advanced stage.

“Plateau, in the past, has been leading in terms of soccer until its fortunes started dwindling.

“But with this facility in the pipeline, I assure you that we will bring back life into the game of football in the state.

“With this facility, there is no reason why we will not bring the national team to play here,” he said.

Gusau called on the people of Plateau to support the governor’s drive in providing quality infrastructure in the state.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
