Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State has expressed support for press freedom and acknowledged the media’s role in strengthening democracy.
Speaking through his Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Tofa, the governor made this known on Monday while receiving the newly elected leadership of the Kano Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Government House.
He congratulated the new executives and acknowledged the peaceful nature of their election.
Kabir-Yusuf described the media as “a critical pillar in nation-building and democratic consolidation,” adding that his administration recognises its role in promoting transparency and accountability.
“We sincerely appreciate the role of the chapel in bridging the communication gap between the government and the people,” he said.
“This government is media-friendly and will continue to welcome constructive criticism that promotes good governance and public accountability.”
He called for mutual trust and professionalism in the relationship between the media and government, and assured journalists of unrestricted access to information.
He added that the administration is open to deepening engagement with all accredited journalists working in Kano.
In his response, the new Chairman of the chapel, Murtala Adewale, acknowledged the government’s continued interaction with the media and said the new leadership remains committed to journalistic ethics and objective reporting.
Adewale also called for stronger collaboration between the media and government to improve the flow of information and ensure accurate reporting of government policies and programmes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit served as an opportunity to discuss ways to improve media-government relations and promote better access to public information.
