Mohammed Gobir, a former director of Afromedia Plc, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja for his role in a large-scale fraud involving over N1 billion, $3.5 million scam.

Gobir, who was arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in September 2015 at his Ikoyi residence, was found guilty on all 17 counts of charges brought against him. The charges bordered on stealing, obtaining money under false pretence, forgery, and possession of fraudulent documents.

In the course of the trial, the EFCC revealed that Mohammed Gobir falsely claimed he was investing N1 billion in Afromedia Plc. Instead, he siphoned massive amounts, including $3.5 million, N514.4 million, $2.1 million, and £51,000, for personal use.

In one of his deceptive schemes, Gobir told investors he needed $250,000 to secure a waiver certificate for the release of $250 million allegedly frozen in the United Kingdom by anti-money laundering officials—a claim the court found to be entirely fictitious.

Despite his not guilty plea, Justice Raliat Adebiyi ruled that Gobir’s actions represented a “grave breach of trust” and a “betrayal of fiduciary duty.” She sentenced him to seven years on each count, to run concurrently.

In addition to the prison term, the court ordered Gobir to pay restitution amounting to $1 million and N123 million.

The EFCC welcomed the verdict, describing it as a “watershed moment” in the fight against economic and financial crimes, and a reminder that no individual is above the law.
