Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, has died at the age of 71.
The traditional ruler passed away on Friday in Abuja after a prolonged illness, according to a statement by Sulaiman Idis, spokesperson to Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara.
Bello, who ascended the throne on March 16, 2015, following the death of his father, served as the 16th Emir of Gusau.
Before his appointment, he was a seasoned civil servant who rose to the rank of permanent secretary in the old Sokoto and Zamfara states.
In a condolence message, Governor Lawal described the monarch’s death as a personal loss and paid tribute to his leadership and commitment to the development of Zamfara.
Part of the statement read: “I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau.
“I express my heartfelt condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the immediate and extended family of the late Emir, the Gusau emirate, and the entire people of Zamfara State.
“His Highness’s passing is a huge loss for Zamfara, the North, and Nigeria as a whole. He served the people faithfully for 10 years as Emir, leading with commitment, dedication, and deep faith.
“I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guided me and other state leaders. May Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah.”
Details of burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the emirate council.
