In a shocking development from Auchi, Edo State, a man has reportedly disappeared with over ₦20 million after allegedly defrauding more than 1,000 people under the pretense of selling cheap rice.
Reports circulating on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) indicate that the suspect opened a rice shop in the area and initially sold over 100 bags of 50kg rice at the unusually low price of ₦20,000 each.
The attractively discounted rate drew a large number of eager buyers, and the stock was reportedly sold out within hours. Following this, the man assured customers that a new batch would soon arrive and encouraged them to pay in advance to reserve their bags.
Believing the offer was genuine due to his earlier delivery, over 1,000 individuals allegedly sent him ₦20,000 each in anticipation of receiving their rice.
However, by the following day, the vendor had vanished without a trace.
The news was first shared by user @KunnujiC, who posted:
“So one guy opened a shop in Auchi selling a bag of rice for N20k and after finishing the stock, he collected over 1000 people’s demand of 20k each order to bring them more bags of rice. This morning, as people woke up, bros don run.. 😂😂😂 This is not format but wickedness.”
The incident has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians voicing their anger and disappointment over the growing frequency of scams particularly in an economy where people are already facing financial hardship.
