Court Jails TikToker, Musician for Abusing Naira

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kano has convicted and sentenced a TikToker, Abubakar Ibrahim (known as G-Fresh), and a musician, Hamisu Sa’id (known as Hamisu Breaker), for abusing the Nigerian currency.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Directorate, arraigned the two on separate one-count charges of Naira abuse, contrary to Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.

According to the EFCC, Abubakar Ibrahim, in November 2024, “while dancing at Rahma Sa’idu Shop in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, sprayed and stepped on ₦1,000 notes totaling ₦14,000, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.”

In a similar case, Hamisu Sa’id Yusuf was charged for tampering with the sum of ₦30,000 in ₦200 denominations by spraying the cash during a social event in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

Both men pleaded guilty to the charges.

Justice Shuaibu sentenced them to five months in prison each, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine.

“They began their journey to imprisonment when they were caught spraying the Naira notes. They were charged to court and jailed,” the EFCC said in a statement.

The EFCC added, “Abuse of the Naira remains a criminal offence, and violators will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
