EFCC Impostors Convicted, Sentenced in Kano

Two men, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, have been sentenced to six months in prison by a Kano State High Court for impersonating investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judgment was delivered on Friday, July 25, 2025, by Justice Nasiru Saminu following their arraignment by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the EFCC.

According to court documents, the duo used a forged EFCC identity card to pose as officials of the anti-graft agency. The charge against them stated, “That you Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of this honourable court falsely impersonated to be investigators of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) where you used false identity card and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC and you thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code law.”

When brought before the court, both men pleaded guilty.

Following their plea, the prosecution counsel, Idris I. Haruna, presented a summary of the case and urged the court to convict the defendants.

Justice Saminu subsequently found them guilty and sentenced each of them to six months in prison, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine.

The fake EFCC officers were arrested by operatives of the commission after their fraudulent activities came to light.
