The Civil Society Coalition on Security, Peace and Conflict Resolution in Jigawa State has expressed support for the state government’s plan to construct 1,000 commercial shops at Farm Center in Kano.
In a statement signed by its President, Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, the coalition addressed concerns surrounding the recent approval of the ₦3.5 billion project by the Jigawa State Executive Council.
“We have keenly observed the ongoing public discourse and debate on the government’s plan, which attracts both acceptance and rejection,” Basirka said, adding that public dialogue is part of democratic engagement but should remain constructive.
Basirka explained that the land earmarked for the project is part of the state’s inheritance after Jigawa was carved out of the old Kano State in 1991. “This land, strategically located within Kano’s commercial hub, was rightfully inherited by the Jigawa State Government… It was also discovered and handed over to Jigawa State by the EFCC after a thorough recovery process,” he said.
He said the decision to build shops was aimed at addressing the decline in federal allocations. “Our government made an informed, strategic, and most importantly, responsible decision to utilize this vital asset for the collective good. The vision is clear: boosting Jigawa’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR),” he said.
According to the coalition, financial experts who reviewed the plan believe the location has strong potential. “Developing commercial properties in a high-demand, high-traffic area like Kano’s Phone Market will provide a consistent, substantial, and sustainable boost to Jigawa State’s IGR,” Basirka stated.
Basirka warned against politicizing the project. “We urge you to embrace this monumental development with understanding, unity, and a shared vision for our future. This is a moment for collaboration, not division,” he said.
He also noted that civil society groups would continue to monitor the process. “As Civil Society actors, we will strategically engage, monitor, and ensure that the project is delivered with quality execution. We will periodically check transactions to ensure transparency and accountability in managing the investment.”
Basirka added that citizens can contribute ideas to improve the project. “We welcome, actively encourage, and eagerly await your valuable suggestions,” he said.
The project, located in one of Kano’s busiest markets, is one of the largest external investments made by Jigawa State in recent years.
