Officials of the Lagos State Taskforce have apprehended a woman, Mrs. Kehinde Raji, for allegedly using toxic colouring substances to convert spoiled yam flour into contaminated Elubo Isu, a popular local food consumed by many Lagos residents.

The arrest took place on Friday, July 25, and was disclosed by the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

Wahab stated that the arrest was based on credible information from the Chairman of the Elubo Sellers Association, who raised concerns about suspicious and potentially hazardous food processing activities taking place in the market.

“We received a reliable tip-off this morning from the Chairman of the Elubo Sellers Association, alerting us to unsafe food adulteration practices happening within the market,” Wahab said.

According to the Commissioner, some traders were allegedly mixing toxic colouring agents with spoiled yam flour to produce and sell contaminated Elubo Isu to unsuspecting buyers.

Following the report, operatives from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit quickly stormed the market and apprehended Mrs. Raji while she was allegedly engaged in the act.

Initial reports suggest that several consumers have experienced health issues that may be linked to the tainted yam flour.

Commending the market leadership for their cooperation, Wahab said, “We appreciate the market leaders for alerting us to this serious public health threat.”

He also confirmed that the suspect will be prosecuted under existing Lagos State laws on food safety and consumer protection.
