In February 2025, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission tightened its sanction against energy theft with a N100,000 to N300,000 fine on offenders.

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has stated that electricity theft is more damaging than kidnapping, citing the severe impact it has on the power sector and national economy.

The electricity distribution company disclosed this via its official X account.

“Person wey dey bypass light, worse pass kidnapper. You will soon understand why,” the disco wrote.
