Protesters calling for a hostage release deal and an end to the war blocked traffic on one of Jerusalem’s main highways on Sunday morning.

The demonstrators marched from Hebrew University’s Givat Ram campus and occupied Begin Boulevard, a key thoroughfare in the capital.

Organizers had kept the protest route secret, instructing participants only to “follow the drummers.” Within minutes of the demonstration’s start, the drummers abruptly changed direction, leading marchers toward the highway.

Police declared the gathering illegal but, as of mid-morning, had not begun arresting protesters who were sitting on the road.
