The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Adewole Adebayo, has criticised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu.

Adebayo said Tinubu’s economic policies are the direct opposite of those succeeding in Brazil.

The SDP chieftain made this statement on Wednesday while responding to questions in an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television.

Adebayo was reacting to remarks by President Tinubu when he addressed Nigerians in North America.

Tinubu had said that Nigeria and Brazil once shared similar economic starting points.

‎“Once upon a time, Nigeria and Brazil stood on the same level. Look at Brazil today, its technology, its food systems. We must ask ourselves: what do they have that we don’t?

‎‎“We have the brains, the energy, and the youth. We have everything we need. Now, we must act,” Tinubu had said.

Reacting to Tinubu’s remarks, Adebayo said Brazil has sound economic policies which Nigeria lacks.

“Brazil is next to USA; so they have a big economy and the government and the private sector are participating. They have indigenous industries arising from agriculture, coffee, soya beans and all of that; then they have the high end with aeronautics, defence and all of that.

“The country that makes a lot of money from producing aircraft, like Embraer, and all those other companies, is making more money just producing plain soya beans. So the economic policy of the president is opposed to the one that succeeded in Brazil.

“I’m happy that he’s there, because by going there, he will see how rough headed his own policies are,” Adebayo said.
