The Bauchi State Police Command says it is investigating the alleged killing of a soldier by a police officer attached to a mining company at a checkpoint in Futuk community, Alkaleri Local Government Area.

Police spokesman, SP Ahmed Wakil, told journalists on Friday that Commissioner of Police, Sani Aliyu Omolori, has called for calm as security agencies jointly probe the incident.

Wakil cited a report by an online platform (not DAILY POST) which stated that the late soldier, Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Ali Haruna of the 33 Artillery Brigade, was shot on August 25 while trying to stop a truck suspected of carrying illegally mined minerals.

The truck, with registration number Gombe 676-BLG, allegedly refused to stop, leading Haruna and his team to pursue it.

The report alleged that when the truck was intercepted, Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, a mobile policeman, opened fire on Haruna, hitting him in the stomach. He was rushed to Gombe Specialist Hospital but died from the gunshot wound.

Wakil said the report was misleading, adding that early findings showed the truck belonged to Guruje Mining Company Limited and ZURFI Company Limited, which have valid licenses to mine lead and zinc in Gwana, Alkaleri LGA.

He explained that Inspector Ibrahim was officially assigned to provide security for the companies’ staff and operations.

Wakil added that the police command and the Nigerian Army Military Police have formed a joint investigation team to uncover the real cause of the incident.

“The investigation will be thorough, professional, and aimed at ensuring justice,” Wakil assured.
