CSOs demand probe of alleged multi-billion naira financial scandal involving Kano govt officials

Several civil society groups on Thursday staged a protest in Kano State to demand an immediate probe into an alleged multi-billion naira scandal by officials of the Kano State government.

Abdullahi Muhammed, the coordinator of the Forum of Kano Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption, told journalists that the reason for the protest is to demand a probe into the large-scale corruption rocking the Kano State Government.

This comes as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) uncovered how the Director General of Protocol in the Kano State Government, Abdullahi Rogo, allegedly diverted a staggering N6.5 billion belonging to the people of Kano.

The group backed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the ICPC action against corruption in the state.

It further urged the state House of Assembly to swiftly begin an independent probe into the corruption allegations rocking the state.

“We are also appealing to the Kano State House of Assembly to launch an independent probe into the matter. We are also pleading with the judiciary to ensure impartial rulings in all corruption-related cases.

“We stand united because corruption is killing Kano. Public trust has been betrayed, billions of Naira have been syphoned, and the people continue to suffer while a few individuals enrich themselves,” the group stated.

It added, “Despite the recovery of N1.2 billion by ICPC, the state government has engaged in propaganda and denial, attempting to discredit credible reports and downplay the scandal.”
